CPL Joshua Reeves, of Watkinsville, Ga., was killed Sept. 22 when an improvised bomb exploded near the 26-year-old’s Humvee while he was on patrol in Baghdad. His wife, Leslie, gave birth Sept. 21 to their son in Tennessee. Army officials presented Reeves’ parents with their son’s Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals. His posthumous promotion was in recognition of his service, which one of the officers said was “an example of what all American soldiers should strive to achieve.”

Speakers at his crowded funeral service remembered him as adventurous and funny but also a good listener. One of the last photos Reeves sent home to his parents showed him and fellow soldiers with new friends, sharing a meal with an Iraqi family that had invited them to their home. Reeves’ family previously said he was scheduled to come home on two weeks’ leave in November.

“He was the least selfish person I had ever met,” his wife Leslie wrote in a statement that was read at the service. “He never judged others. He accepted people as they were and where they were and never talked bad about anyone. He was a strong and courageous man and helped me to become stronger than I ever thought I could be.”

The fee is $15.00 by 4/4/08, $20.00 afterwards to race day. T-shirts will be guaranteed to all preregistered participants and on race day as supply last. Registration and packet pickup will be held at the Military Building at the corner of Sanford and Baldwin Streets on the UGA campus beginning at 8:00AM.

Proceeds from the 5K will go to a fund for his newborn son. His son was born within a day of CPL Reeves' passing.

Awards will be presented to top 3 Overall Men/Women and also the youngest and oldest participant.

Any donations less than $100 are still appreciated and your name will be listed on online publications for the event. Non-cash donations are also appreciated. Depending on type of donation and size, we will negotiate publication on the t-shirt.
